Group Counseling
Group Counseling
Group counseling can be one of the most effective methods of treating emotional and psychological issues. Just being a part of a therapeutic group has its benefits. Group participants often describe their experience in group thusly, “even before I opened my mouth to talk, I heard someone else described some of the issues I have been going through.” Group counseling, when conducted effectively, can provide the participants a sense of what psychologists call universality ("I am not alone, I am not the only one with a problem"). This type of attitude when addressed effectively in a group can be the beginning of the process of change. Openness, transparency, emotional honesty are some of the essential elements of an effective group counseling. Some clients participate in group as the only method of treatment, and others participate in group to supplement their individual counseling. Some of the group services provided at New Horizons are issue focused, for example, anger management, substance abuse (also DUI related), and domestic violence. Some of the groups are time limited based on the number of sessions required by the referral sources, or a predetermined length agreed upon by the group leader and the members. Other groups are open groups and participants process out as their goals and needs are met. There are different groups counseling offered at New Horizons Counseling Center. Some groups are for self referred clients and others are designed for court mandated individuals: Substance abuse group, Anger Management group (Adults and teens), and Domestic Violence group. In addition to the above group, we also offer the followings: men’s group (personal growth), women’s group (Led by Lisa Sacklelarres, LCSW), and co-ed personal growth group.
